Types of Truck Side Steps

Running boards and side steps perform the same basic function, allowing people to get in and out of a tall vehicle and providing easier roof access. Here are the key differences between each accessory:

• A running board has a wide and flat surface, mounting flush against the rocker panel with more ground clearance.

• Side steps or nerf bars are narrower and leave a gap between the bar and the vehicle. Some styles also have separate step pads for each door, and these models sit lower to the ground than running boards.

• Drop steps offer a lower step, making entry in lifted vehicles easier. They are usually U-shaped hoops mounted below each door.
